The Lowry Theatre Supports Children’s Musical

I’m excited and delighted to announce that I’m partnering with The Lowry in Salford to help bring my children’s musical theatre show Fred: The Musical to life!

In the midst of my legal bid over the John Lewis Christmas advert, I’m proud to have submitted a grant application to Arts Council England to help take my children’s musical theatre show ‘from page to stage’.

Based on my best-selling picture book Fred The Fire-Sneezing Dragon, the show is aimed at toddlers and primary school children. Fred: The Musical is packed full of life and laughter, with lots of pantomime-style audience interaction. “Oh yes it is!”

Fred: The Musical tells the tale of a lovable young dragon whose fiery sneezes cause chaos at school. With sing-along songs, actions and dance, the show explores how Fred, who is teased by his human classmates, accidentally saves the day.

After penning the script and lyrics for Fred: The Musical, I’ve spent many months pulling together a creative team and project plan to get my interactive musical theatre show for children on its feet. The project will see me collaborating with a team of professional creatives and actors to explore the work, aiding my transition from author to theatre-maker.

In what feels like a big dream come true, The Lowry has agreed to be a Partner in the project. This involves providing space to hold cast auditions, as well as hosting one of the very first live performances of the show!

The Lowry is a highly respected multi-arts centre and performance venue located at Salford Quays in Greater Manchester. I’m thrilled to have secured considerable project backing from an organisation known for supporting emerging artists and developing exciting new theatrical work.

The Lowry has offered in-kind support by providing space for holding cast auditions for Fred: The Musical. I will be hosting the audition day alongside the show’s Director & Musical Director. This will be followed by a two-week rehearsal workshop where my script will be brought to life by a professional creative team.

The project will culminate with two live performances, including one at The Lowry where the show will be presented to a test audience featuring theatre industry producers and programmers.
